It’s time to move and you’re trying to decide what to do with your belongings. Moving has a way of showing us just how much stuff we have that we really don’t need. If you’re finding that you have plenty of items you don’t really want to take with you, there are a couple of options. You can store your belongings, or you can sell them.
Selling
The simplest way to get rid of all those unwanted odds and ends is to sell them. This ensures someone else will use the items and they will have purpose again. You can sell on Facebook Marketplace, local classifieds sites, or even a traditional car boot! The idea here is to remove the stuff from your home and make space wherever possible (not to mention reducing workload).
If you are in the middle of moving, you may want to simply discard or donate some of the smaller items, rather than trying to sell them. It can be tough to sell some items and if you’re unlikely to make enough money for them, it’s not really worth it. Instead, focus your attention on the things you actually can get a good price for, and continue with those.
Storage
Not everything is ready to be sold. As you go through your belongings, you’re likely to find that there are quite a few items that you’d enjoy keeping, but don’t really have room for in your new home. If there’s no place for these things, you can always put them into storage.
Before you choose to store something, consider whether or not you will use it in the future. Are you holding onto it for sentimental value or will you actually put it to future use? Certain keepsakes should definitely be saved, but often you will be able to narrow down which items need to be stored by contemplating future usage.
Once you’ve decided which belongings you want to store, it’s time to contact a storage company. You can either have someone come to you and pick up your items to take to storage, or you can rent a unit and take everything there yourself. For those who are in the process of moving, it may be simpler to have the company manage it all for you.
Look for storage companies that offer different sizes of storage units. If you have just a handful of items, you don’t really need to rent a huge space. Choosing a size-appropriate unit will save you money.
Whether you sell or store, it’s never a bad idea to declutter and start reducing the amount of stuff you have in your home. You’ll feel lighter when your home has less in it.
