It goes without saying that when you are moving house, you shouldn’t leave everything to the last minute. When you are going to pack, carefully consider what you do and don’t need and avoid taking any clutter to your new place. Unless you are travelling light, there is no way that you will be able to unpack all of your stuff immediately or on the first day of the move. With this in mind, it's worth thinking about what essential items you’ll need soon after crossing the threshold.
With this in mind, in this handy guide we outline a few top tips to help you organise your packing and get your move up and running as smoothly as possible.
You don't need to leave everything to the day before the move. Consider what you don't need to take with you, what will need careful packing and what is covered for potential breakages.
● Take some time to go through your belongings and have a proper clear-out. You can make up a box for charity and, if you have time to do so, hold a car boot sale and put the proceeds of your sold goods towards doing a bit of redecorating or towards some new furniture for your new home.
● Figure out how many boxes you’ll require and get these in advance. Find boxes in a variety of sizes. Think about what else you will need, such as strong tape, bubble wrap and self-seal bags for keeping nuts and bolts together if you have to take furniture apart. Keep old newspapers for lining boxes.
● Don't over- fill large boxes, they will be too heavy to move or lift up.
● Use sturdy packing boxes, particularly for bigger items or belongings that may end up strewn all over the place. Boxes made from corrugated cardboard tend to be stronger than regular ones. You can usually find these at supermarkets, off-licences or bigger retail stores, however, make sure that they are clean first.
● Check that your contents insurance will cover you for any damage or breakages during the move.
● Put any material that is classed as hazardous, such as paint, bleach and aerosols, into a separate box and keep them away from the rest of your stuff.
● Unless you are traveling light, you will not be able to unpack everything in the first day, so it's certainly worth deciding what you may need easy access to shortly after you cross the threshold.
● Pack an 'essentials' pack for your first night in your new home and keep it with you. Instant access to coffee, tea, snacks, cups and a kettle will be necessary after you arrive. As will plates, utensils and cleaning wipes.
● Prepare an overnight bag for everyone in the family, and make sure that there is enough toilet paper and toiletries for everyone.
