Tips for Settling Into Your New Home

Packing

It’s no secret that it can take a while to make a new house feel like a home. Even once you have unpacked all of your possessions, hung up all of your clothes in the wardrobe and stocked up the fridge, a bare house that smells like fresh paint can feel far from homely. Once the period of hectic unpacking and chaotic organising is over, you may find yourself struggling to settle into your new home - and don’t worry, this is completely natural. Follow our top tips below to help you settle into your new home.

Unpack, unpack, unpack

After moving into a new home, you will likely be unpacking here and there for weeks. Trying to unpack absolutely everything at once can be overwhelming, so don’t feel bad about slowly unpacking over the course of a few weeks. You may not have a home for everything straight away. Remember, however, that the more you unpack, the more your house will feel like a home.

Add some homely touches

Adding a few homely touches here and there will make you feel more at home. You may find yourself still referring to your old house as ‘home’, but, in time and with the right additions, your new house will soon become home. Hang up photos of friends and family, as well as artwork to add some personality and colour to the place. Put out your favourite vases, coaster mats, rugs and ornaments. Even replacing boring blinds with your favourite curtains can make you feel more at home.

Establish a routine

When you move into a new home, everything can feel a bit up in the air for a while. If you have pets and children, it is important that you get into a regular routine to help them, as well as yourself, settle in better. Perhaps you walk your dog at a certain time every day, or dedicate an hour each Friday evening to playing a game with your child. Try to stick to these routines and incorporate them into your new life in your new home.

Explore the neighbourhood

If you haven’t had a chance yet, spend some time exploring your new neighbourhood. Pop round to your neighbours to introduce yourself and familiarise yourself with the local shops, parks and restaurants. Take a look in the local newspaper for events that are happening near you. If you have children, take them on a trip to the local park where they can mix with other children.
